Dr. Babak A. Ardekani graduated from Texas Tech University with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1982. He received his Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Ohio State University in 1985. From 1985-1990 he worked as a lecturer at the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Kerman, Iran. He obtained his PhD degree in Physics from the University of Technology, Sydney, Australia in 1996. Dr. Ardekani went on to complete a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Research Institute for Brain and Blood Vessels, Akita, Japan from 1996-1999. Since 1999 he has been a Senior Research Scientist at NKI. His academic and research interests include: development of algorithms for analysis and processing of tomographic brain images; parallel computation with medical imaging applications; brain image registration (within and between subjects and imaging modalities); measurement and characterization of water diffusion in the brain using diffusion-weighted imaging; applications of pattern recognition and machine learning to MRI image analysis; statistical image analysis; image segmentation; iterative image reconstruction; and brain morphometry using MRI. Recently he has been working on developing techniques to study age-related changes in brain structure with application to early detection of Alzheimer’s disease. In his spare time, Dr. Ardekani enjoys playing soccer and riding his motorcycle.
