Dr. David Liebers is a psychiatrist at the Nathan Kline Institute and Research Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the New York University Grossman School of Medicine. His research interest is studying therapeutics with potential to improve the impaired mitochondrial function and abnormal brain bioenergetic metabolism observed across psychiatric disorders. At present, he is leading a clinical study of a sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitor (a class of antidiabetic medication with ketogenic properties) in depression and exploring the uses of these medications in other areas of psychiatry. His previous work focused on genetic predictors of illness course in mood and psychotic disorders.
Dr. Liebers completed his medical studies at Harvard Medical School, and then completed his residency training at New York University Grossman School of Medicine and Bellevue Hospital in New York City where he served as Chief Resident. He completed his undergraduate work at the University of Rochester, holds a Master of Philosophy in the history and philosophy science from the University of Cambridge, and a Master’s in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. He was awarded the Nina Schooler Early Career Research Award from the American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology, as well as the Lara Fuchs Award for Clinical Excellence in Inpatient Psychiatry and the Harold I. Kaplan Memorial Award from New York University’s Department of Psychiatry Residency Training Program.
